About Opportunity

Research undertaken by the NSPCC has shown that the majority of children who contact Childline for advice, information and support are over 11 years old. However, we know that the majority of children on the child protection register are under the age of 11. The Childline Schools Service focuses on primary school childre, with a particular focus on 7-11 year olds. Our aim is to visit every primary school in the UK at least every 2 years. By focusing on our three main objectives as outlined below, we aim to reach every primary school in the UK and start a societal change that will bring about a long term reduction in child cruelty. Objectives - to ensure children have an understanding of abuse in all its forms, including bullying, and an ability to recognise the signs of abuse. To ensure children know how to protect themselves from all forms of abuse. To make them aware of how to get help and sources of help. How does it work? The Childline Schools Service delivery model involved 2 stages of working with children. the first stage is an assembly which covers: definition of all forms of abuse, places to go for help and introduction to Childline. The second stage which happens approx 1-2 weeks later is an interactive classroom-based workshop. This is our opportunity to work more closely with the children and reinforcde the messages given in the assembly. We will ensure that head teachers/principals are briefed on the content of the delivery and teachers are present so that they can continue reinforcing the safeguarding messages with the children.
