About Opportunity

Volunteers are needed to help support children with a disability to enjoy a summer play-scheme held within a local primary school during the school summer holidays 2012. The Volunteer would need to attend 4-5 days training prior to starting within the play-scheme. Volunteers will assist the project workers in providing a service to children with a disability to enjoy activities within the setting of a play-scheme. To assist in the provision of a range of support and opportunities to play in a safe, fun and stimulating environment. Volunteers will assist in the maintenance of the physical, emotional well-being and general health of the children to the highest possible standard, support staff in matching process and ensure that personal plans are followed, participate in the development and maintenance of professional and caring relationships between staff and children and families, provide direct and indirect support to children, including one-to-one support and two-to-one support, work within Quarriers' policies and practice guidelines and National Care Standards & work within the National Care Standards. Volunteers facilitating groups will be required on a weekly basis, over a period of seven weeks.

Quarriers is a Scottish charity providing practical support and care for children, adults and families. We challenge poverty and inequality of opportunity and choice, to bring about positive change in people's lives. Quarriers operates 127 Projects throughout Scotland and South-West England. They vary greatly, due to the wide variety of needs that we address but include group homes and supported living services for people with physical and learning disabilities, support services and Scotland's only residential assessment service for people with complex forms of epilepsy; a residential and day school and community based projects for children with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties; hostels and support services for young homeless people; family centres; respite and long term care for children with a range of disabilities and other difficulties and support services for carers.

Skills & Experience

Enthusiasm and commitment to tasks, fun & energetic personality, interpersonal skills; including empathy & a caring attitude, good verbal & written communication, to take part in supervision, to communicate effectively within the team, to participate in training as required, to work with individual children on a one to one basis or two-to-one basis, to be responsible for daily recording e.g. noting significant occurrences, providing feedback to parents/carers at the end of each session, to liaise with Medical Practitioners, Social Workers, families and other agencies as required, and to liaise with support staff within Quarriers as appropriate and when required and to ensure that effective records are kept relating to all activities undertaken. Volunteers must be available to meet with children and families prior to the Play-scheme to help develop working relationships.

Travel Details

Support will mainly remain in the North Ayrshire Council Area. There may be occasions where support is required outside of the North Ayrshire Council Area.

Training and Induction Details

In-house training will be provided shadowing a mentor as well as appropriate Quarriers training. Support and supervision will be provided by line manager.
