About Opportunity

Volunteers would be involved in conducting guided tours and assisting with the care and maintenance of exhibits within the Museum of Fire.This involves conducting guided tours for visitors and includes some cleaning and maintenance work on exhibits within the museum. Where volunteers are willing, they may also assist with archiving and recording exhibit details within our database. Full training and guidance will be provided as will the appropriate museum guide clothing. Volunteers would receive travelling expenses.

About Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service

The Museum of Fire has recently received the Full Accreditation award from Museum Galleries Scotland and as a result, we require volunteers to assist existing staff with a number of roles. Volunteers would receive training and supervision with a view to becoming a museum guide within the Museum of Fire in Lauriston Place, Edinburgh.

Skills & Experience

Volunteers should have good communication skills and be comfortable engaging with all age groups within the Community from small children to older visitors. Applicants will be representing the Fire Service and will be expected to present a positive manner, enhancing the reputation of the Fire Service.

Travel Details

The Museum of Fire is located in central Edinburgh, in Lauriston Place and is located on numerous bus routes. Private parking could not be provided.

Induction/Training, Informal Chat, Trial Period

Training and Induction Details

Full training and supervision for the initial period will be given by existing volunteer and uniformed members of the Fire Service detailed to work in the Museum. Volunteers will be given full information on the exhibits and on supervision arrangements.

Frequency & Commitment

Open to discussion but usually required to cover 10 o clock to 4 pm. It could be one day a week, fortnight or month – agreement would be reached on individual basis.
