About Opportunity

Assisting the Collections team with cataloguing new and backlogged items - Assisting with the reorganisation of the collection’s stores - Assisting with research as required - Assisting with data entry on to the Collection’s database - Supporting the wider curatorial work of the museum staff as required

About Scottish Fisheries Museum

The museum exists to preserve the material history of the fishing industries of Scotland in all their aspects and to promote the understanding of their past, present and future. We do this by collecting, preserving, researching and interpretating material relating to Scottish fishing and it's associated industries, technology and communities, and by making the material accessible to as wide an audience as possible.

Skills & Experience

Skills and Experience: - Attention to detail - Good communication and teamwork skills - Some basic IT skills - No previous collection or museum based experience is necessary Personal Qualities required: - Reliable and able to commit to regular volunteering - Happy to work independently or under minimal supervision - Interest in social and industrial history an advantage, but not essential

Volunteers can: Gain experience working with a collection which is recognised as being of national and international significance; Experience cataloguing a range of different objects; Network and gain skills from a range of museum professionals

Frequency & Commitment

Ideally volunteers will be able to commit to one day a week, Monday - Friday, 10 - 4, with a break for lunch. However, more flexible hours can be arranged if needed including weekends.
