About Opportunity

The Go Active Project provides support for Adults affected by sight loss to access and participate in community based social and recreational activities and is participant led. Volunteers are required to support participants individually or in group settings, the role will include facilitating introductions, engagement, relationship & confidence building & providing sighted guiding to participants to engage in their chosen activity/event. Some activities participants may require support with include: Leisure Classes Social/educational/ support groups Walking Group Tandem cycling Day trips Road shows/information events Volunteers will be expected to: Support individuals (1:1) or in small groups to participate in activities. This may be through sighted guiding, describing environments and orientating people with their surroundings Facilitate introductions, if and when required Encourage independence Provide encouragement and support to all participants Join in with activities as required Resource local services or activities available

Skills & Experience

Volunteers come from all walks of life and do not need to have experience to participate. We will give you visual impairment awareness, induction and other relevant ongoing training to ensure you understand how best to support people. We would like all volunteers to have: Excellent verbal communication skills Excellent listening skills Patience A positive attitude towards people with disabilities Willingness to take part in activities Willingness to undertake appropriate training as required by Visibility Proven reliability Good sense of humour Understanding of health and safety issues Local knowledge of service/activities available

Travel Details

Activities may take place anytime during the week, day or evenings, and at weekends and you can volunteer for as many activities as suits your own personal circumstances.

Induction/Training, Informal Chat, Police Check, References, Trial Period

Training and Induction Details

All volunteers will be required to attend training specific to their role from time to time, there is also a requirement for volunteers to meet with the Co-ordinator every 3 months to discuss their experience of volunteering for Visibility.
