Launched in 1989, Friends of Hillcrest is a local voluntary charitable group dedicated to promoting the welfare of the elderly residents and tenants of Hillcrest care home. One of the more positive achievements of the group's work to date has been the purchase and operation of the Hillcrest minibus. The provision of such as independent means of transport has in turn generated a greater degree of self-worth and independence for the local elderly. Whether it be local shopping, collecting their own pension or continuing to visit and be involved in local community social events, the bus has been a proven asset to the mobility of people at Hillcrest. A Hillcrest carer accompanies all outings, so potential drivers do not require specialist first aid knowledge or a medical background. We operate "MIDAS" Minibus Driver Awareness Scheme so a degree of tuition and assessment is driving the powered steering minibus can also be extended to all potential drivers. Irrespective of the nature or length of journey trips with the minibuses are cheery outings with never a dull minute. Operation of our minibus and our outing programme is dependent on the availability of our registered volunteer driver.
