About Opportunity
SBRCC is based in Galashiels, where its centre provides a safe, women-only space for women and girls to talk freely, one to one, and in confidence to trained volunteer support workers. The service also provides one to one support to women in other safe locations in other parts of the Borders and telephone support form the centre to male survivors and friends/families/partners of female survivors. The volunteer trustees are legally accountable as directors to the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator and Companies House, and to its main funder, the Scottish Government for the efficient, legal, and financially sound direction of the free service, which is delivered by a full-time paid Service Coordinator and a team of volunteer support workers.

About Scottish Borders Rape Crisis Centre
Historically, Rape Crisis Centres were mainly staffed by volunteers offering a rich tapestry of skills, experience and support to survivors. In recognition of all the invaluable support offered over the 30 years we aim to protect the ethos of welcoming volunteers into the work of all rape crisis centres in Scotland.
Scottish Borders Rape Crisis Centre aims to provide a safe, non-threatening environment where women and girls can talk freely and in confidence. We offer face to face and helpline support to women and girls who have experienced sexual violence, within a women only space.
We also provide support / information via the helpline to male survivors, family members, local workers and colleagues. The new centre will provide the opportunity and support to empower women / young girls to reclaim control of their lives.
We aim to develop an education & awareness programme which will directly address prejudicial attitudes towards female survivors of sexual violence.
Skills & Experience
You must have: A genuine interest in how sexual violence affects women, girls, families and communities; a belief that women-only local services can help reduce these effects by supporting people in distress; and acommitment to learning and working with others to share understanding of the impact of sexual violence. Because we would like to strengthen our range of Trustees’ skills, we particularly welcome applications offering: Financial or legal knowledge or experience; Understanding of minority ethnic or cultural communities, or people with disabilities.
Travel Details
Meetings of the board of trustees take place in different locations in the Borders, usually on Monday nights 6-8pm, every 5-6 weeks. Trustees are also expected to attend occasional training and development meetings, and encouraged to take on occasional support roles such as fund-raising applications. Travel expenses are payable.
Restrictions
Female volunteers only. Posts exempt under section 7 (iii) (d) & (e) of the Sex Discrimination Act 1975.

Training and Induction Details
Initial induction on responsibilities of governance and charity law; introduction to work of SBRCC and national body Rape Crisis Scotland; Rape and Sexual Assault awareness training; ongoing development.

Frequency & Commitment
Estimated 4 hours a month to prepare for, travel to, and attend board meetings. Attendance at board meetings every 5-6 weeks.
