About Opportunity

An NHS led Community Garden Project is underway at Galloway and Newton Stewart Hospitals which is called " Grounds 4 Better Health" and a steering committee has been formed involving organisations and agencies in both areas. It is anticipated that the gardens will be up and running by the spring of 2011and growing fruit, vegetables and flowers by the summer. the gardens will be used by various members of the community for exercise, socialising, health improvement and therapy as well as for learning and developing gardening skills. The focus will not be on any one special group or oganisation and membership and use will be variable to include people suffering from addiction, mental and physical health problems as well as people and staff just enjoying the socialising aspects which such a garden introduces to the community. Volunteers are required to assist in the setting up and running of the gardens.

About NHS Dumfries and Galloway

' Grounds 4 Better Health' is the setting up and running with Community Gardens at Galloway Hospital and Newton Stewart Hospital. They will be used by a variety of members on both communities as a means of execise,socialising, health improvement and for therapy and for learning and developing gardening skills to include people suffering from addictions, mental and physical health problems.

Skills & Experience

None but gardening/ horticultural background would be beneficial but anyone with any kind of interest in the subjects would be welcome to pick up new skills and experience

Travel Details

The opportunity exists in both Stranraer and Newton Stewart at the two sites at the hospitals and following acceptance as a volunteer set rate travelling expenses can be paid.

Restrictions

Only over 16s at present but may be relaxed to accommodate school children when gardens are established

Training and Induction Details

Support will come from Projecyt Co-ordinator and present steering committee which in time will become a general committee and volunteers will have the option of joining the committee and attending regular meetings.

20 pence mileage rate is available for use of private vehicle and will be paid monthly.

No restrictions on requirements but would obviously be more until gardens established and in growing season but less in winter period.
