About Opportunity

The SAMH (Scottish Association of Mental Health) Well Informed Service provides a resource for people enquiring about mental health issues at a local level. The resource is for anyone living/working in the North Lanarkshire area and can be accessed via phone, face-to-face, e-mail and by post. The volunteer will attend mental health/ well-being events throughout North Lanarkshire where he/she will participate in mental health information stands and/or talks. The volunteer will promote the role of the service and foster relationships with other organisations/services. A central part of this role will be the distribution of the Information Service leaflets as well as gathering promotional material from other local organisations/services to display within the Information Resource Centre.

About Well Informed (formerly NL Mental Health Information Service)

The SAMH Mental Health Information Service provides a relaxed and informal facility for people enquiring about local mental health and wellbeing in the North Lanarkshire area.

Skills & Experience

Essential: • A basic understanding of mental health issues • Ability to listen and respect the support and guidance of staff and volunteers • Maintain high standard of service in all aspects of the work • Commitment to Equal Opportunities • Commitment to personal development • Ability to follow and adhere to the information service’s policies and procedures Desirable: • An understanding of recovery • Experience of team working • Competent in administrative skills Skills and experience likely to be gained from the role • A greater understanding of mental health issues • Knowledge on mental health/ well-being services/organisations at a local and national level • Active listening skills • Ability to work with both organisations and service users • Continual in-house SAMH training available throughout the year related to volunteer role. • Regular support and supervision will be provided.

Travel Details

Community events throughout North Lanarkshire, liaising with the service base in Motherwell.

Training and Induction Details

Initial induction training which includes the following: SAMH volunteer training; customer service skills training; mental health mind-set training; and Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).
