Working on the track and formation is often an energetic activity involving changing and packing sleepers, keeping the track in alignment, maintenance of drainage and cutting back line side growth. No previous railway knowledge is necessary skills. Working on bridges and buildings involves the usual construction 'trowel' trades, woodworking, plumbing etc. Mainly outdoor work.
