32 - Short Break Carer / Befriender
When We Need You
From 27/01/2009 onwards
About Opportunity
You could either take a disabled child out for a few hours or you could welcome the child into your own home for short visits or overnight stays. This gives everyone the opportunity to make new friends, do different things, and volunteers gain a lot of satisfaction from the friendship they develop with the child, in the knowledge they are contributing to the quality of life of the child and their family.
About Enable Fife, Lend-A-Hand
Our scheme offers short breaks to children with learning disabilities. The child is linked to one of our volunteers and visits that volunteer on a regular and planned basis.
Some children spend a few hours with their volunteer. Others can go on to stay overnight in the volunteer's home for upto 2 weeks, although 1 or 2 night breaks are more common.
Skills & Experience
Need to have lots of patience, a positive attitude to children with learning disabilities and likes to have fun. No previous experience is needed as full training is given.
Travel Details
After an initial spell of getting to know the child in his / her own house you could take the child out or help out by accompanying that child to a group event, e.g. guide, youth club etc where otherwise the child could not access such groups. Or you could bring the child into your own home and they can get to know your extended family too.
