About Opportunity
? The role of the OT (IPU) Patient Visitor Volunteer is to assist the Ward Manager in implementing a programme of visits to patients in the In –Patient Unit. Volunteers meet with the Ward Manager , following which visits will be discussed and planned. ? A list of the ward update can be collected at Reception at the start of each shift. ? Visits and conversations can include anything which may interest and stimulate patients, encourage social interaction and promote a sense of achievement and well being. i.e visits to the garden or local area, reading newspapers to the patients, talking about subjects which interest the patient, card games, dominoes etc. ? Visiting will mostly be carried out individually in patient’s rooms or sometimes in the Cedar Lounge if appropriate. ? Complying with Infection Control and other Health & Safety procedures, observing confidentiality and liaising with staff and other volunteers.

Skills & Experience
OT Team (In Patient Unit) Patient Visitor Volunteers require to have:- ? Ability to act as part of a team and independently and within role responsibilities. ? Ability to help within guidelines but responsive to patients’ needs as they arise ? Ability to accept times when patients may be unresponsive to the offer of company ? Understanding of and commitment to the palliative care approach – non-judgmental, accepting, patient, empathetic. ? Ability to relate well to people and to reflect and learn from experience ? Ability to function in the presence of grief and distress with a sensitive, calm approach. This involves regular unsupervised individual contact with patients. ? To attend Volunteer Induction, Fundamental Palliative Care, Infection Control, Communication, Moving and Handling and relevant training courses/ team meetings.
