About Opportunity

The role of the befriender would be to support people with disabilities to take an active role in their local community. This may be to get to the shops, visit the cinema or go to visit a museum or other places of interest or to attend a local group. The role may include travelling on public transport or on foot. Use of a car would be an added bonus but not essential. Some of our members are wheelchair users.

About Ability Centre

The Ability Centre day provides support services to adults with physical disabilities. The aim is to promote personal personal independence and promote integration and participation of disabled people in the community.

Skills & Experience

General life skills, willingness to share interests with others, good sense of humour, treats people as equals. The person would be supporting people who could be seen as vulnerable so would need to be trustworthy and reliable.

Travel Details

The opportunity takes place either at the Ability centre or in the local community. At present opportunities are mainly in the Central Borders and are during day times hours.

Application Form, Induction/Training, Informal Chat, Interview, Police Check, References, Trial Period

Training and Induction Details

The induction would cover core values and how to support adults with disabilities and what is expected of their role. There could be opportunities to attend first aid courses etc.
