About Opportunity
Peer Support are looking for volunteers to offer a few hours support with people who have either Diabetes, COPD, a heart condition or have/had or are living with cancer. The Peer Support Befriender needs to have experienced one of these long term conditions personally. Our Aim: The Peer Support Befriender will be out and about in the community of West Dunbartonshire participating in social activities on a one-to-one basis offering mutual support. Our Peer Support Befrienders: Our volunteers will be trained to provide social support and companionship within the boundaries of a befriending relationship. Peer Support Befrienders may be involved in home visits or helping individuals to participate in social activities. Peer Support Befrienders will provide an opportunity for people to share their experiences in a relaxed and informal setting as an addition to the support that they already receive from their medical service. Our Role: Peer Support Befriending staff will meet with potential volunteers to establish what they hope to gain from the project. After an induction, a training course, carrying out disclosure and reference checks we will carefully match people according to various factors; these include volunteer’s interests, hobbies and personality. We will also provide ongoing support for the duration of the peer support befrienders involvement with the project. Any agreed expenses incurred during the peer support befriending social activity will be reimbursed.
