About Opportunity
You would be linked with a child with learning disabilities aged 11-16 so you can meet up regularly to do social and leisure activities of your choice. This could be anything from attending a club, golf, or fishing to shopping, crafts, music, going for a walk or drive or going to the cinema or a cafe. The satisfaction to be had from the role and the difference it makes to the child’s life is immense: By being linked with a volunteer, a child with learning disabilities can do the things they want to and know that the person helping them is doing so because they want to, not because they are paid to or feel obliged to. This improves their quality of life, confidence and self-esteem. The role is great work experience and a source of references if you are thinking about applying for courses or paid jobs in Care.

About Interest Link Borders
Interest Link Borders aims to improve the quality of life of people with moderate to severe learning disabilities in the Scottish Borders.
It achieves this through an adult 1:1 befriending service and a group befriending service for young people aged 16-25
The services are needed because although most people with moderate and severe learning disabilities now live in the community, they are still socially excluded as they have no social contacts outside their family or day centre, no experience of making friends and no transport. This is frustrating, isolating and limiting; they cannot pursue interests, participate in mainstream community activities, make choices, gain skills or develop independence.
Skills & Experience
Most important qualities are personalities and interests. The role is a friend and supporter, and we will provide the training and support. Volunteers must have a sympathetic attitude towards people with disabilities. Must be reliable, committed
