The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) believes that people gardening together can enrich local communities and bring about a sense of wellbeing and improved environmental quality. Through its community campaigns, the RHS supports over 2,000 cities, towns, villages and neighbourhoods around the UK, which involve over 200,000 volunteers nationwide in cleaning up and greening up their local areas.
Its ‘Britain in Bloom’ campaign gives advice and support, recognition and reward for those making long-term improvements to their locality. Communities of all sizes take part, from local authorities tackling metropolitan areas to villages improving their local environments.
The ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ initiative helps small, volunteer-led groups to improve their immediate local areas. Communities get involved in improving all aspects of their local environment: everything from litter picking to planting up new areas; creating new wildlife gardens to clearing waterways and caring for conservation areas.
With over 160 groups across Scotland there are an enormous variety of local volunteering opportunities available: everything from hands-on activities, to working on a committee, organising funding bids, publicity and events. To find out about groups operating near you, please email Anne. Strachan or telephone 01786 477 171
