From the offset it became apparent that having a volunteer, rather than a member of staff, involved in hygeine audits for the Infection Control Department made people more willing to open up with issues or problems they might have – it opened a gateway of communication.

Muriel Ann MacLeod, Artistic Director, Theatre Hebrides : Theatre Hebrides grew out of a community Play project that began in 1997 so we knew from the outset there was a high interest in people wanting to volunteer, particularly when we had a show on. Because actors and crew have to be paid on a professionally fixed rate of pay we knew we would have to rely on the support of volunteers to make other aspects of the Theatre Company viable. As far as possible, we try and give volunteers a development processes so that they can progress and improve their skills during their experience and it’s been very rewarding when we see people eventually being employed into relevant work.

Moira Tisley, Witness Service Coordinator : Victim Support, which Witness Service is a part of, evolved from a group of volunteers so we have always relied on them. The service came about when we realised that noone was giving victims any support through the court process – they may have received some practical information, but no explanation about what to expect, how the courts operate or any support for any emotional distress they might be experiencing.
